The most wasted foods and ways to save them from the bin.

Here are 3 of the most wasted foods and how to save them from the bin:

1) BREAD 🍞
Bread freezes really well, so make sure you pop in the freezer if you’re not going to use it. Stale bread can be turned into croutons, breadcrumbs, French toast or even bread & butter pudding.

2) POTATOES 🥔
Store potatoes in a dark place so they last longer. If they have been hanging around for a while, cook them all up and freeze in portions. Make potato cakes, fishcakes or gnocchi with leftover mash. Par-boiled potatoes can be sliced and sautéed for a quick supper or roasted to make potato wedges (which can be cooked & frozen).

3) MILK 🥛
Did you know you can freeze milk? Hello instant iced latte! Milk changes texture when it is frozen and may seem like it is separated when thawed. A quick stir or shake will solve this problem and make it usable in no time. Alternatively, the milk’s new texture can be perfect for adding to cakes or even making your own ice cream. To freeze it properly, make sure you use a large container which will give enough space for the milk to expand.

Too late to the rescue and left with sour-smelling milk? Using (quality) milk as soil fertilizer has been an old-time remedy in the garden for many generations. In addition to helping with plant growth, feeding plants with milk can also alleviate many issues in the garden, from calcium deficiencies to viruses and powdery mildew. If you have access to a garden, this might be an idea for you to explore.
